Benefits of Therapy
Speaking with a counselor about trauma, stress, negative life moments, and more can be difficult, but ultimately beneficial. Having someone in your life you can trust to work with you on helping to cope with experiences causing pain, anxiety, or depression may help you face these challenges more confidently, cope with them in a healthier way, and build your self-confidence and resilience.
LGBTQIA+ & BIPOC Therapy
Prism Therapy Solutions was founded with the goal of working with kids, teens, and adults who are part of the LGBTQIA+ and/or BIPOC community, but we also welcome folks of all backgrounds and identities. As members of these communities, we understand the challenges faced within them. These struggles can start early and be present throughout different stages of life. It’s our mission to help you develop realistic tools for navigating these issues and develop a strong sense of self.
Recognizing & Addressing Trauma
When we think of traumatic experiences, they might typically involve terrifying, life-threatening moments. While those are, in fact, forms of trauma, they aren’t the only forms. People can experience trauma in any situation. Trauma comes from the feelings a person has about an event or circumstance. These can include feeling afraid, overwhelmed, helpless, and other negative emotions or experiences.
In short, emotional and psychological trauma may be abundantly clear in some cases and less obvious in others. It’s important to remember that the objective facts surrounding any moment are not what we use to determine the level of trauma an event can impose on a person. It’s all about how someone felt about the event as it was happening and after the immediate moment passed. Understanding what trauma may look like is key to seeking help and addressing the issues that result.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
What is CBT?
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a combination of behavioral therapy and talk therapy. It’s used to help you reframe negative thought patterns into positive ones, encouraging you to retrain your mind into leaning into those positive thoughts and feelings in stressful times. Your therapist will work with you to help find the root cause of these thoughts and work with you to find personalized coping strategies.
How Can CBT Help?
There are several ways CBT can help, including dealing with anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can also be helpful for individuals who may not feel the impacts of any diagnosed mental health disorder, but want to find more effective ways to tackle stressful situations that come up in daily life.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
What is TF-CBT?
Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is a short-term, structured treatment focused on helping children, teens, and young adults work through the impacts of trauma. In TF-CBT, we use cognitive-behavioral techniques to adjust negative behaviors and/or reactions, then work toward modifying distorted thinking.
How Can TF-CBT Help?
Although TF-CBT was initially developed to address children who had experienced sexual abuse, the treatment has grown to serve many children, teens, and young adults who have gone through any form of trauma. This treatment can help address issues stemming from trauma such as anger, depression, anxiety, and feelings of guilt or powerlessness. It can also address symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can involve sleep problems, recurring intrusive thoughts, concentration issues, and more.
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)
What is EMDR?
Eye movement desensitization & reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that helps people access trauma and other adverse life experiences in order to intellectually and emotionally process them and begin healing. During an EMDR session, eye movements or other bilateral stimulation (sometimes in the form of hand or leg movements) are used as your therapist guides you through memories to work through your feelings about them.
Many researchers believe that the similarity between EMDR and rapid eye movement (REM) experienced during deep sleep is key to how memories are uncovered. When someone undergoes talk therapy, they can gain insights through the interpretation of their therapist. When a person undergoes EMDR, they gain insights through their own accelerated emotional processing.
How Can EMDR Help?
There are several ways CBT can help, including dealing with anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can also be helpful for individuals who may not feel the impacts of any diagnosed mental health disorder, but want to find more effective ways to tackle stressful situations that come up in daily life.
